Verse 1: The Big Warning
“Woe to every scandal monger and slanderer.”
What does “Woe” mean?
In the Quran, the word “Woe” (or Wayl in Arabic) is like a very loud siren. Imagine a big “Warning!” sign. The word is used in the Quran about 40 times to act like a giant, flashing “Red Alert”, a very serious warning. It is Allah’s way of saying, “Stop! This behavior is very dangerous.”
When someone does something very wrong like spreading rumours, Allah uses this word to show that there will be big trouble ahead.
It is a warning for people to change their ways before they face a really difficult consequence.
Why is Allah using it here?
Usually, when someone is mean to us, we might be the ones to say, “Hey, that’s not fair!” But in this verse, Allah is the one speaking up. He is defending people who have been lied or whispered about. He is telling the people who spread rumours or make fun of others: “Be careful! There are very tough consequences for telling lies or gossiping.”
What are those consequences?
Later in this chapter, the Quran explains that these people who keep bullying and gossiping about others will face a place called “The Crusher.” This is a very strong way of saying that doing bad things leads to a very unhappy place away from Allah’s love.
What does wayl mean?
• A Big Warning: Most scholars say “Woe” is a way to describe how much trouble a person is in
• A Valley in Hell: Some stories say “Wayl” is actually the name of a deep valley in Jahanam (Hell).
Whether it is a special valley or just a big warning, the message is the same: Telling lies or a spreading rumours is a very big deal.
The Lesson for Us
Allah wants us to use our words to be kind, not to hurt others. This verse reminds us that:
1. Allah sees when people are being mean
2. He protects the people who are being picked on
3. We should always try to speak kindly so we don’t have to worry about the “Woe”
